The rules behind the numbers
- Diameter from the room: add the room's length and width in feet. The total is the diameter in inches [1][2].
- Diameter from the table: 1/2 to 2/3 of the table's width, with the light's edge about 6 inches inside the table's edge. When the room and the table disagree, go by the table [1][2].
- Height: 2.5 to 3 inches of light for every foot of ceiling [1][2].
- Over a table: the bottom 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop [1][2].
- Where people walk: the bottom at least 7 feet above the floor [1][2]. That's why the calculator shows the longest drop for your ceiling.
Open, airy designs can go a size up; dense or ornate ones a size down [2]. Then check the product's listed size against these numbers, and how to check the size before you buy.
