The rules behind the numbers
- Height: choose a tree at least 1 foot shorter than the ceiling, so an 8 foot ceiling takes a 7 foot tree [1]. The calculator also checks that the tree, the topper and the stand fit under the ceiling, and rounds down to the half foot trees are sold in.
- The stand: a stand under a real tree typically adds 6 to 12 inches [2]. Put 0 if the tree's listed height already includes its stand. Measure your topper; if you don't use one, put 0.
- Width: a full tree is typically 55 to 65 percent as wide as it is tall [2]. Slim and pencil trees suit small rooms and corners [1][2].
- Safety: keep the tree at least 3 feet from any heat source, such as a fireplace, radiator, heat vent, candles or lights, and don't let it block an exit [3].
