The rules behind the sizes
- Living room: leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls [1]. The calculator picks the largest standard size that keeps at least 12 inches.
- Dining room: the rug reaches at least 24 inches past the table on every side, so pulled-out chairs stay on it [2]. For a round table, enter its diameter twice.
- Bedroom: the rug reaches 18 to 24 inches past the sides and the foot of the bed. The usual sizes are 8 by 10 for a queen and 9 by 12 for a king [3].
Standard sizes are 5 by 7, 6 by 9, 8 by 10, 9 by 12 and 10 by 14 feet [1]. Then check the listed size against the room, and how to check the size before you buy.
