The rules behind the numbers
- Clearance: 36 inches between the table edge and the walls or other furniture [1][2][3]. Chairs with arms need 42 inches; 24 inches works only where chairs tuck under the table [2].
- Seats: 24 inches of table edge per person [1][2][3]. A table at least 36 inches wide also seats one at each end, which matches the seating chart in [2].
- Width: 36 to 42 inches is common for a rectangular table [1]. The calculator uses 42 when there's room.
- Round tables: 35 to 42 inches across seats 4, 44 to 52 seats 6, 54 to 72 seats 8, and 66 to 84 seats 10 [2].
- Height: 28 to 30 inches for a standard table, 36 for counter height and 42 for bar height [1].
Hanging a light over it? The chandelier size calculator sizes that, and the rug size calculator sizes the rug underneath.
